Advance your practice with an acclaimed artist

      Theatrical Realism vs Photorealism

Jonathan Dalton’s work is primarily concerned with a photorealistic style overlayed with the delicate observation of nuanced drama. In a highly technical body of work, his practice also includes a slight undercurrent of drama and panache, seen in symbolic subtleties littered through each work. Jonathan was a finalist in the 2017 and 2018 Archibald Prize and is a current finalist in the 2019 Archibald Prize.

The topic of this workshop will be a yellow themed still life of lemons. Jonathan will guide the class step by step by demonstrating his process through technical stages on a 40×40cm painting. The painting will depict four lemons, which will illustrate each lemon at a different stage of painting. The day will be spent following Jonathan’s expert technical guidance at each step including working from photographs, colour mixing, final details and glazing and varnishing. There will be opportunity during the day for one-on-one discussion and assistance.

The Masterclass workshop series provides an exciting opportunity to learn about the creative practices of past winners and finalists from the prestigious Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes. Designed for the more experienced artist, these workshops will enable you to further develop your skills and experiment with practices under the expertise of these highly regarded artists.
