      Stead Memorial Environmental Lecture

The David G. Stead Memorial Wild Life Research Foundation of Australia is pleased to announce the newest edition to the Australian environmental calendar - the Stead Memorial Environmental Lecture. As an annual event, the lecture will showcase Australia's environmental pioneers, highlight those making a difference for future generations and promote or provoke thought across diverse environmental issues. The theme for this event is 'One person can make a difference', in memory of David G. Stead. We are very pleased to have two outstanding individuals to share their story for our inaugural Lecture. The Honourable Bob Carr Former Australian Foreign Minister, Bob Carr is also the longest continuously serving Premier in New South Wales history. He served as Minister for Planning and Environment 1984 to 1988 and as Premier from 1995 to 2005. As Premier he received the World Conservation Union International Parks Merit Award for creating 350 new national parks. He introduced the world’s first carbon trading scheme and curbed the clearing of native vegetation, both anti-greenhouse measures. He was a member of the International Task Force on Climate Change convened by Tony Blair, and was made a life member of the Wilderness Society in 2003. Sophia Skarparis The problems facing our natural environment are easily accessible to a wide range of age groups. At the age of 14 and exposed to the problems of plastic, Sophia decided to take up the challenge to ban single use plastic bags in NSW. Her commitment and determination resulted in; gaining 12,000 signatures, the NSW State Parliament debating the topic, a meeting with the Premier and Australian Geographic's Young Conservationist of the Year - all before completing year 10. Sophia is a dynamic and energising individual. Find out more about Sophia at Plastic Free Sophia. - Light lunch / refreshments will be available after the lecture. - Please arrive early to be seated for the the 12:00 start. - 10% of the seating is set aside for school students at no charge. - Bookings essential. The Stead Environmental Scholarship will also be awarded at the event - to support a TAFE student studying in the field. All funds raised by the lecture and associated fundraising go directly to establishing the perpetual scholarship.
